In the recently released Democracy Index for 2020-21, India slipped from the previous 51st position in 2019 to 53rd position among 167 countries. Though we claim to be the largest democracy in the world, the recent events in the country paint a gloomy picture. From a score of 7.92 out of 10 in 2014, we have come down to 6.61 in 2020. Although we remain a 'flawed democracy', our scores on civil liberties and political culture have been the cause of our "democratic backsliding".

Our ranking on the Press Freedom Index is nothing to be proud of. According to Reporters Sans Frontieres, a Paris-based NGO, our country was ranked 142 out of 180 in 2020. It was just two places up from 140 in 2019 and 138 in 2018, indicating that press freedom is on a continuing slide. This has been rejected by I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar saying that "media enjoys complete freedom in India." The fact is that our image in the international arena has been tarnished, and it calls for some serious reflection.

Releasing its annual report for 2020, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), an advisory body to the US Congress, recommended that India be listed as a "country of particular concern" along with countries such as Pakistan, China and Saudi Arabia. be designated as For its "increasing attack" on religious minorities during 2019.

In Asia, we have the highest record of bribery and corruption. According to the latest report from Transparency International, we have the highest bribery rate of 39% and "the highest rate (46%) of people using personal connections to access a public service." (Deccan Herald)
